Overview

General area radiation shielding is best suited where radiation exposure is incurred from numerous sources, large sources, or when there is not a practical means for installing shielding on the source.  Examples include a refueling floor radiation shielding, steam generator work platform radiation shielding, BWR turbine building radiation shielding, and sampling lines radiation shielding.  General area radiation shielding is versatile and practical choice for many radiation shielding applications.

In most cases, general area radiation shielding is achieved by erecting a shield wall of lead blankets installed on hooks.  Those hooks may be on standalone racks, scaffolding pole, or suspended from a lattice of nylon webbing or chains.  When a more permanent solution is appropriate, shield walls can be constructed from fabricated steel that contains lead plates.  Finally, water shields are shield walls that can be filled with water once deployed.
