Lead (Pb) Shielding
Overview
Lead (Pb) shielding is cost effective and offers excellent gamma attenuation properties. The attenuating properties of Lead are only surpassed by exotic and expensive materials such as Tungsten (W) and depleted Uranium (DU).
Encasing Lead in Steel eliminates its health hazards and weak physical properties, while retaining its attenuation performance and cost effectiveness. The high temperature resistance and all steel exterior make it ideal for permanent shielding applications.
Lead wool blankets are the industry standard radiation shielding product for industrial applications. They are typically used to create a barrier between a radiological source and the rad worker. Lead blankets are often hung by S-hooks on scaffolding or cables to create a shield wall. They may also be draped over pipes / valves / heat exchangers or placed on the floor to shield sources from below.
